British Columbia History Museum—Wednesday 2

Today was a little slower (finally). All we really had planned was a trip to the BC Museum, and lunch at the Legislature building. Since the museum opened at 10AM, we had a relaxing start. It was chilly and looked like rain as we walked the 4-5 blocks, so we were very glad to be inside today. The museum wasn’t too bad, but the first part was all about the “natural history” which very quickly became a treatise on how mankind is ruining everything. The next floor began with a history of the “First Peoples”, which is what the Canadians call the indigenous people (once called “Indians”). Again, it started feeling like an exposition on how Western Europeans ruined everything. We took a break to go to lunch.

There is a restaurant in the basement of the Legislature building, where presumably the legislators eat. The public is welcome to eat there also, but only afterwards. The dining room was really too small for many of them to eat there anyway, since it only sat about 40, and there are about 85 members of the assembly. After a good meal, we noted the closed circuit TV showing the activities in the legislative chamber was much more interesting than yesterday! They were having an impassioned debate with raised voices about some health care issues. After the “Opposition” member gave her speech, the rest of her party hooted and hollered, and banged on their tables. It reminded me of Planet of the Apes! We considered going back up to watch the fireworks. But, we returned to finish the museum.

The final part of the museum was about the history since western influence. That part was the most interesting, and what I enjoyed the most. But, we had to hurry through it. We had signed up for Tea Time at the B&B at 3pm, so took a quick sojourn back for that. Then, the tickets we bought included one of the many IMAX movies they had. We considered one titled “BEAVERS, The Best Dam Movie You’ll Ever See”, but we decided it would be more fun to watch “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II” instead. So, about 4:30, we lined up for the 5:00 show. The movie was a little different in such a zoomed in format. The detail put into every part of it was far more apparent this way.

After the show, we peeked at a few items in the gift shop, and found a “Canad-oply” board game. The cover said something about “Eh to Zed” which, for some reason struck me as very funny. We headed to a pub for which Theresa had a coupon. So, we wrapped up the evening with a good meal. I tried putting the videos up, but it wouldn’t cooperate, so we’re behind a little now. Maybe I’ll catch up Thursday?
