Day 9-“Wondering” about Deidesheim

A winery with very dry Riesling.

We took today more or less as a “day off”.  We headed out on foot to the town (Deidesheim; Dye-du-shime), intending to visit some of the local wineries (Weingut).  As it was nearly (but not quite) Noon, we stopped into a little bakery to get a donut and coffee.  Leaving at 12:03, we judged it was safe to start looking for wine!  They did not seem to be much like wineries we have toured in the past, where you walk in, and they sort of have a little presentation and format.  It was kind of aloof and you just had to ask for things.  The first place we went supposedly had very dry Rieslings.  Since we both prefer drier wines to sweet ones (and previous to this trip, only having had sweet Rieslings), we were game to try it.  The wine was called “Dry as a Bone” and it was very nice, and quite dry (especially for a white).  We also tried a Rose and a Red wine, and ended up purchasing a bottle of the White Wine.
After some wandering, we went into another “Weingut”, which seemed much more fancy than the first place, and a gentleman came out to greet us, asking what we would like.  We said “We are just wandering…” to which he said “What are you wondering about?”  Immediately, we found it humorous, thinking he might be cracking a joke, referring to the commercial from some years ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR0lWICH3rY&feature=youtu.be ).  He only said it again, having no idea why it was funny, and I realized, “No, he actually thought I said wondering!”  That made it even more funny (to me, not him!).  They didn’t invite us in to try the wines, so we kept wandering through the town.
Theresa and her "Fammkuchen" pizza.
We went to a little place for a late lunch.  It turns out they were first mentioned in print in 1496, so the building is at least 520 years old.  It just like one might expect for a restaurant centuries ago, although perhaps brighter.  Theresa got the “Fammkuchen”, which was sort of a pizza.  She liked it, and it went well with her beer, but Bill wasn’t very impressed.  (Bill got a soup and a glass of wine.)
Afterwards, we came back to the condo, did some looking for places Theresa lived/knew from when her family was stationed here, and packed up our suitcases, as this is our last night in the Condo. It was mostly a quiet day, but relaxed and rather enjoyable!

  1. Had Flammkuchen last fall in Paris, of all places and liked it. Went back twice. We're enjoying your blog. Germany is definitely on our list. We had a short stay last May in Munich, but are itching for more and maybe include Bavaria where the ancestors are from.
