Day 1—The Beginning!!

We wanted to go somewhere…and found a place that was sort of open. We debated whether or not to do a blog for this trip. These days, some people just don’t accept travel of any sort. So if you are one of those people, well either forgive us or don’t read. For the rest, we’re wearing masks and all that, and behaving as best we can! 

Anyway, we always wanted to check out Colonial Williamsburg. So here we are!! We were a little creative getting here. Starting in DFW, we hit the Centurion Lounge. They have actual breakfast and a full bar!! And the sausages are so good!! Not sure how long Theresa will keep the AMEX that gets us in, but it has already paid for itself, so another year it is! We flew to Philly, where there was another Centurion Lounge (first time to one not at DFW). They only had “grab and go” food, so, we decided to grab a lunch and go to the Admiral’s Club which has only cold food. We ended up with too much food, so, we’re calling it “groceries”! On to Newport News, a brand new airport for each of us. It was a quaint little airport, but honestly, it looked to be very well laid out and seemed to have great amenities. (Too bad we’re not flying home that way.) We got our rental car and headed for Williamsburg. Checking in, they asked our names and I pointed out this is “my town”. (She didn’t get it, but Theresa did.) For dinner, we heated up the sandwiches from the trip and took the evening off. 

Sunday, we started by celebrating the Fourth Sunday of Advent with Mass at St. Olaf (the Patron Saint of Norway, and fittingly situated in Norge, VA). It was hard to not keep thinking of some cartoon snowman. We found a statue of St. Olaf, and he was an early King of Norway, and didn’t appear to be a snowman at all! (They put a mask on the statue, which we would have photographed, but it seemed rude as the priest was right in front it it.). 

As this was the start of "Western Civilization" in North America, it seemed fitting to begin in Jamestown, a site that began "permanent" settlement in 1607 (albeit with some issues). In the parking area, they had each of the 50 State flags. I immediately noticed someone parked right in front of the Ohio flag! :-) The museum was half inside and half outside, but it was raining all day, so we just did the inside. There was a LOT of info there, but it didn't seem laid out very well. But we enjoyed it nonetheless.

After the museum, we talked about dinner options, and Theresa noticed "Billsburg Brewery". Well...of COURSE!!! We stopped off for a quick pint of Bill's Brew!
