Day 2—Cold Colonial Williamsburg!

A row of colonial buildings...along an unlikely "colonial" street!

It was cold today!  OK, sure, maybe it wasn’t THAT cold, but it sure seemed like it!  Yesterday it was rainy so we thought today would be so much better.  As we got ready to leave, we noticed two nice big bulges on the sidewall of the tire.  Hmmm…  Well, a few phone calls, but no resolution.  Later!

We got to Colonial Williamsburg, and began to explore.  A lot of it was closed.  And a lot was scaled back.  Whether it was due to December or due to 2020, or both, we don’t know.  It was nice to see the look of it, but the gigantic street down the middle just made it look unrealistic.  That said, we peeked in several windows, and saw a couple of exhibits.  There was a Q&A with “George and Martha Washington”, which was interesting, and they did a good job.  But shivering for 30 minutes made it less interesting with each passing minute.  We visited the Capitol Building, and learned how the Royal Governor sat over the highest court, over the legislature, and over the executive role, so was sort of a "local king".  It gave some definite context to reason our Constitution was clear in their desire to keep those three parts of government in DIFFERENT hands!

Yesterday, we were in Jamestown, which was the "Capital" of Virginia from the 1620s until 1699.  Today, we were in Williamsburg, the Capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1789 (right after the Revolution).  Now we kind of hope to make it to Richmond, the current Capitol.  We'll see!

The Capitol

We wandered over to the market area and found some lunch.  But having sat there warming up for a bit, the cold seemed even less fun, so we headed back.  We had to take care of that tire anyway.  The 2 mile round trip wasn’t “bad” but we’re on borrowed time!

The Governor's Palace

Long story short, we got to spend just over an hour at Firestone getting the tire replaced.  Not exactly what vacation dreams are made of but we’re also pretty glad this is a low key trip and we had the time to spare.
