Day 4--The day we got half a blessing!

For Breakfast, they sat us on the other side, so "new" view?
We got to bed late last night, so slumbered a little longer in the morning.  We got down to breakfast, and it was a little chaotic.  They took about four parties at once, and scrambled trying to keep up with everything.  But, the coffee was hot, so we’ll call it a win.

The Cathedral.

After breakfast, we headed into the center of the city to go to church.  As long as we’re going…why not the Cathedral?  We were told they had Mass at 10, 11, and 12.  So, we targeted getting there about 10:40…and found Mass was at Noon.  We explored the inside for a bit and then found a seat.  As it was High Mass, it was Celebrated by the Archbishop…or actually, the Cardinal!!  But there wasn’t really any pomp.  But in the recessional, he stopped multiple times to bless many people.  We noticed people were sort of lining up as he made the loop, so we got in place near the end.  Just as he came up, he turned toward Bill, lifted his hand and motioned down…then some guy shoved in with his water bottle, and the Cardinal blessed his water.  So, not sure if we got blessed or dissed??

Wow!!

I like the intersecting arches.

The Cardinal.

Guac/Mayo/Tomato = Italian style?
We headed out to explore the square (Plaza de Armas).  In South America, it was common to leave a large square open, and surround it with government (and church) buildings.  Then if there was an attack, the people could all gather in the square, and defend the gaps between the large buildings.  It seemed like many of the people were there perhaps just in case?  We also finally learned why all of these sandwiches were “Italian” style.  They have guacamole (green), mayo (white), and tomato (red).  Good to know!

How do I eat brothy soup with a fork?
There were a lot of restaurants around and near the plaza.  We found one that looked like it had some interesting options.  We started with a beer for Bill and a mineral water for Theresa.  The water was 330 ml for 2000 CLP, and the beer was 500ml for 2660.  Seems like Bill got the better deal!  Bill got a “Beef Casserole” (according to Google Translate), but it was really more of a stew/soup with potato, squash, a big chunk of beef, and some rice.  It was pretty tasty!  Theresa got a pizza with chorizo/sausage, tomato, and pimento, and a lot of cheese.  It was awesome!  We will have to find that again!

The Presidential Palace...through the bushes!
We wandered about a little more and kept passing little stands with “Mote con Huesillo”, the local drink.  We saw this before on a YouTuber we like watching, and finally tried it.  They take a cup, and scoop some barley, then fill it with like a peach tea.  It was sweet, but not overly.  And the barley was very tender, but small.  It was worth the 1000 CLP.  Ready to head home, we decided we had to go a little more “local”.  One gets a much better sense of a city by taking the subway.  So, we walked around the Presidential Palace (fenced off like they didn’t want us there) and then found our way.  It was mostly uneventful, but interesting.  We walked the last few blocks (about a mile?) and passed the Military College.  It wasn't a bad walk, but the sun was so brutally hot!  Happy to be back in Air Conditioning!

The Military College (near us).

For dinner, we were going to use our Amex benefits for a free meal at the hotel.  Unfortunately, the restaurant was all booked, so we used the benefits to have dinner and watch Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollow 2.  Not a bad way to spend the evening!
