Day D—Munchen (Munich)—"Can we get an Engineer in here?”

No more bags out!!
Last day to have bags outside of our room before breakfast, and only two more days to unpack/repack.  After breakfast, we were on the bus to Munich by 8:30.  After about an hour and a half drive, we stopped at the palace “Nymphenburg” which was the summer home for the Bavarian monarchy.  This was the place where Ludwig II was born (the man who built Neuschwanstein).  We saw lots of “Schwans”.  Then we had a bus tour through the city, where we were told how many “normal people” lived in an area, versus how many students (who aren’t normal?).  Several times she pointed out our hotel as “That old looking building” with out any more clarity, so we had no idea which old building it was (turns out it used to the be the main “German Post Office” building).

The gardens of Nymphenburg.

Seven Swans a swimming
...and a few more doing who knows what!

He's not swimming!

He's just posing for a Swarovski box!

Duck, Duck, ... no wait...nevermind!

OK, they aren't even trying to swim!

One Swan a snoozin'

Glockenspiel (fancy clock)
Eventually the bus dropped us off for a walking tour of Munich.  Our guide brought us around to a bunch of places, culminating in the main square next to “Glockenspiel”, a phenomenal clock tower that gives dramatic displays at Noon—which begs the question, why did we arrive there at 12:20?  Eventually, she dismissed us to go find our own lunch, and come back in 2 hours.

Perfect example of how lots of detail does NOT equal beauty!

From the square, one could stand in one place and see several towers...and several clocks!
One tower...

Two more towers...

And the main tower.

We ate here...you can see the other three if you look closely.
Mike, MaryAnne, Theresa and Bill, looked high and low and settled on a spot that 1. Had a bathroom 2. Took credit cards 3. Was as reasonably priced as possible.  It was a good meal actually!!

I had beer...because...Bavaria?  Munich?

Lunch!

Thar be Dragons here!!

St. Peter's Church.

Our Room
Our hotel (The Hotel Sofitel) was pretty fancy!  So fancy, when we got to the elevator, another couple was stuck inside.  So, we figured “We got this”, and stepped aboard to render assistance.  Taking a brief moment to assess the situation, the gentlemen says to the growing crowd outside, “Can we get an Engineer in here?”, to which Theresa quickly said, “Hey!  There are three Engineers right here!”, and proceeded to show him how to get to his floor!

The view of the bathroom from the bedroom??

After COVID tests and some reorganization, we headed out again for dinner with M&MA.  Theresa had located a spot we thought would fit…success!!  It was a more or less local place, but the food was really good!!  And at the end, she brought us Schnapps!!  Not sure what kind...we tasted banana and something else...but free is usually fun!

Just a last showing of our trip.  We caught a bit of the continent.

Now we’re looking forward to a “little” chillin’ time in the room!

  1. What I find bizarre about Munich is that it was completely rebuilt after the war to recreate pre-war Munich. Some of the facades are even painted on to look like the original building blocks.
