On some level, today might seem like a bland use of a
day. But, a friend told me once that our
version of vacationing is NOT his idea of a vacation! So, perhaps today’s events are more plebian,
or perhaps more suitable. Who knows! At any rate, we split up today and Ce and Charles
headed out to Canmore (and beyond) to explore, and Theresa and I stayed
back. Incidentally, Canmore seems to be
named for King Malcolm of Canmore, the man who murdered Macbeth. Also, the place we are staying is right next
to Dead Mans Flats, named from two brothers who moved here from France, and one
thought the other was going to kill him, so he killed the other first. So, it’s a lovely murderous town!! Anyway, Theresa had some work that she had to
do, so this was a time to do it. And I
stayed back to annoy her and distract her and remind her we are on vacation
(isn’t that my job?).

In any event, it was a beautiful day, with not a cloud in the
sky! The blue sky sets off the peaks of
the mountains around us as stark and harsh, unlike the softening clouds
previously. So, as Theresa toiled away,
she at least had a gorgeous view before her!
I spent some time reading, and watching TV. When she finished, we got one of the free DVD
movies and took it easy until our friends came back.

After our friends returned, we played some cards then headed
out to the restaurant recommended at check-in, Iron Goat (or as he pronounced
it…I-ron Goat). As we arrived it was
immediately evident that Iron Goat is the name of a locomotive, evidenced by
the railroad tracks embedded in the sidewalk, small gauge rails for the
handrails, a small coal cart on the side, and the image of a locomotive on the
doors. The food was good! (We had meatloaf made with elk, bison, and Alberta beef!) The drinks were good! (A flight of four beers, including a 49th parallel.) Huge wooden beams and columns were
awesome! And the “Battle of Alberta”
came on (a hockey game between Edmonton and Calgary). In the first two minutes each team had
scored. Ooooookaaayyy…
We wrapped up the evening with a few more card games and
called it a night.
