Day 4—Wyoming! Sort of.

Wait?  This is the day after Labor Day!!
Weather is interesting.  Yesterday it was over 90F, and we were sweating and getting sunburned.  The forecast at the end of last week showed it would be cold after Monday.  But we did not expect how cold or how it would get there.  But, a storm blew through last night with 40 mph winds, gusting over 70 mph.  It lasted over 12 hours, so it sure did clear out the California wildfire smoke.  But it also knocked out power for about 150,000 homes just north of SLC.  When Theresa woke up (around 5AM) it was 30F and snow on the ground.  Because the winds lasted so long (until about noon or 2PM), there were advisories for several freeways.  We adjusted our plans to find something not affected.  After a bit of a lazy breakfast, we hit the road about noon.

What's wrong with this picture?

We headed to the SW corner of Wyoming (the interior corner of Utah).  Why?  (Funny, that’s what Theresa thought!)  It’s not often you know EXACTLY where you are on a map.  And this place is EASY to find on a map!! (just not the map shown to the left! :-)

Welcome to Winter!!

All of Wyoming is behind that stone marker!

The drive was interesting.  Snowy.  Windy.  Ominous dark clouds in various directions.  As we got closer to the corner, paving became one of those luxuries locals did without.  In addition to cell service.  (Bill likes to take screen shots on the map feature but the blank “No service” map was not inspiring.)  Once there, we found a little stone marker, with a bronze plaque.

Yes, I felt as cold as I looked!!

Panorama with both roads on the edges of Utah (going North and East).

We planned to head to a little town in Wyoming for lunch, and proceeded up the road into Wyoming.  I think Utah paved up to the State line, and then used up any spare asphalt, and went home.  Wyoming wasn’t so interested.  So we rumbled up the snowy gravel path…until it was more snow than gravel or path.  And then there was a big incline.  Unsure if this was the worst of it or merely foreshadowing, we turned around and headed back to Coalville, Utah for lunch.  It has all the charm you might imagine!  (Actually, Theresa thought Main Street was quaint.)  We stopped at a little diner that got great reviews!  Now…a little alignment is needed here.  Great reviews in Coalville MIGHT differ from those in say, Dallas.  The lady who took our order was very friendly.  And we asked where the restroom was, and she directed us “into the kitchen, to the onions, and then left”.  We shared the daily special, which included a salad (here you go Theresa!), and added a “Jalapeno Corn Dog”.  In the dining room, there was a pair of ladies at one table (with food and mostly done), and Theresa and Bill at the only other table.  The young lady came out with our food, looked around the (mostly empty) room, peering in a direction where nobody was, and with hesitation called “Bill?”  The daily special wasn’t impressive, but the still partially frozen corn dog was more or less tasty!  It was pretty funny.  But we opted not to leave a review.

Uhhh...maybe not.

Training Jump ramps.  And blue sky!

On the way home, we stopped back at the Olympic Center to finish looking around from Sunday.  The second floor of the museum had a nice display of the all thing 2002 Winter Olympics (as opposed to the “all things skiing” downstairs).  We enjoyed that.  then we headed home and called it a day.

Great Advice!!
