Merry Christmas!! (on St. Maarten)

(Our package included pictures, so this was free!)

Overlooking Phillipsburg, St. Maarten.
Last night we set our alarms for 6:45.  We both should have known our phones had not updated, so were both an hour behind the ship’s time.  But no one thought of that.  So, the alarm went off and Bill checked and said “It’s 6:45.  No wait!!  It’s 7:45!!!”  Well, as it turns out, our phones did update over night so it actually WAS 6:45.  Panic was over, but the adrenaline was still coursing through us!  We got up, got showered and ready to get off the ship in Phillipsburg, St. Maarten.

The line between Dutch St. Maarten and French Sint Martin.
A couple of months ago, Bill met a colleague in Mexico, who was traveling with his wife.  They live in St. Maarten, and long story short, they invited us to spend Christmas with them.  So, we disembarked, and headed to the taxi area.  We found them, made introductions (total strangers to Theresa), and started on a little island tour.  We stopped at a few lookout spots, and a monument marking the divider between the French and the Dutch side of the island.

Risen Christ chapel next to the local school.
Mass was at 11:00, so we headed to church.  It is really amazing to be able to celebrate our faith all over the world!  After church, they invited us back to their apartment where she had prepared a dinner for us.  It was quite the feast for four of us, complete with Pepperpot (a stew of oxtail and some unknowns), turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, and more, and Prosecco!  It was a very nice visit!

Back on the ship, we found our ice cream spot, and had a little dessert, and…went to afternoon trivia!  A gentleman who was traveling alone asked to join us, so we were a trio.  We managed 13 points which was a bit behind the winner with 19 points (out of 20).  But we had fun.

Back in the room we made a quick FaceTime call to say hi and Merry Christmas to Bill’s family.  It is amazing how good technology can be.  We’re a few thousand miles away but can chat face to face with people (well, with people who have iPhones so long as we have WiFi).  Still…it’s pretty cool!

For dinner, we went back to the Italian restaurant.  Our package allowed unlimited visits, and since Bill loves Italian food, Theresa booked three times there and three in the steak restaurant.  Anyway, we had some amazing food again, and then decided to try the desserts.  One choice was the sampler of all of them, so we got that.  Wow!!  One of them was amazing!  Chocolate, hazelnut, and some other things, but it was phenomenal!  We got a few after dinner drinks, but they did not overshadow the dessert!

Dessert sampler!

We went to see the late showing of a Christmas Spectacular.  I enjoyed my Talisker Scotch!  I will let Theresa tell you about the show. TG Edit - It was a really nice show, with songs of Silent Night, O Holy Night, and a couple of songs I didn't know.  They had a funny rendition of the 12-days of Christmas, and read some letters from Kids to Santa.  Fun was had by all (or at least most :-))
