Day 10 - First Port of Call - Tenerife, Canary Islands

We watched two of these circling for some time!

"Bunkering" (taking on) fuel (LNG)!
Welcome to “Spain”!  We had wanted the morning tour but only the afternoon tour was available.  After the last week sleeping in, yesterday when we found the morning had an opening, we thought…Nahhh…  So, of course, Bill waked up about 4:20.  After several minutes, I decided if I snuck out and started the laundry, that would make Theresa very happy!  All I had to do was get up, get dressed, FIND the laundry (which was returned to the closet) and sneak out, without waking Theresa.  Opening the closet door was my downfall.  At the laundromat, there was NO ONE there!!  So, I got the load started, and camped with a book to avoid reawakening Theresa.  Well, now awake, and wondering where I was, Theresa came to find me.  So much for letting her sleep!  Anyway, we waited until 7:30 when the restaurant opened and headed there.

About 11:30, it was time to start thinking about lunch since our tour left at 1:20, and eating is an unknown timeline.  Our usual restaurant was closed.  The Buffet was closed.  The “Americana Diner” was open with a limited buffet.  Guess that works!

One of the Pyramids of Guimar

The bus was PACKED when we arrived at 1:15.  We set out for the Pyramids of Guimar.  There is a lot of uncertainty about these pyramids.  They were built in the same style as the Step Pyramid of Djoser (Saqqara) and pyramids in Central America (like Chichen Itza).  But the locals believed they were just piles of rocks from a farmer clearing a field.  It is probable that a wealthy land owner in the 1820s built them, but no one is certain.  There is lots more history, and if you’d like to know it…there is this thing called “the Internet”.   Anyway, it’s a thing to do and we did it.

Several pyramids we did NOT see!

Not sure why THIS is the Canary Is. mascot??

Proof we were there!

Walking to church!

Then we went to the Cathedral.  Our tour guide basically walked us over there from like ¾ of a mile away, and said “be back on the bus at 4:45”.  The cathedral was beautiful, and we explored it, stopped for prayer in a few spots, and had a little quiet time.  Then headed back.  There was one store we hoped to stop in, but they were closed from 2-4:30 (siesta?) so, back to the bus we went.  We had to be back on the ship by 5:30 and our bus arrived at like 5:15 I think.  By 5:20 we were off the bus, through security, and asked the guard how many people were still off the ship…62!!!!  Then 2 showed up.  Another 4.  Probably a bus is missing, but by the time we got to our room there was a call for “____” party of 2, please call 2000 IMMEDIATELY.  Someone was about to meet us in Cartagena!

The Cathedral

We spent the last 8 days on this ocean, may as well touch it?

We had dinner in the fish restaurant.  Bold choice after yesterday’s Japanese restaurant, but this was (mostly?) cooked.  It was good.  Not as good as the first night, but no complaints.  After dinner we visited one of the shows.  It was a random show pitting two sides of the venue against each other.  It’s hard to explain.  Our side lost.  So, we went to the theatre for the comedian.  He was pretty good!  We laughed and had fun!!  But then, it was time for bed.

On the Beach!!
