We went to Mass at the Airport Chapel, which is sort of
funny, since we seem to do that a lot:
Boston, Chicago, Buenos Aires, to name a few. Of course, all of the readings and the sermon
were in Italian, so, Theresa got a little out of it (having some Spanish to
work with), and I “reflected” on various things while listening to Charlie Brown’s
teacher.
Theresa had arranged a shared ride with another couple on
our cruise, so we met in the lobby, wondering who each other were. The driver showed up, and told us his minibus
was either broken into or broken down, so, he had an “SUV”, but wasn’t sure if
there would be enough room for us and the bags.
He was trying to get a second car to come. Well, after watching him a couple of minutes,
and trying to suggest how to load the bags, I convinced him to step aside. All but one bag in the back, and I sat in the
front with a suitcase between my legs.
Close enough! Let’s go!
It was an exciting ride from the airport to the pier. He was the typical Italian driver, engaged in
(if not leading) the conversation, which involved eye contact and hands. The lines on the road were sort of suggestive
of where we ought to be and he wasn’t much into them. But he was quite interested in talking about
his family, including a brother who was a labor union leader of some level at
Alitalia, his wife who spent a lot of time at the gym (where there seemed to be
too many young strong men), etc. We also
discussed metric to “American” conversions, including feet/meters, square
feet/Square meters, ounces/cL, Celsius/Fahrenheit, miles/km…and maybe
more. For the record, I did NOT bring
this up!! Not me. Huh-uh.
Nope. I did however answer all of
his questions. Poor Theresa in the back.
At the pier, we dropped our bags, and headed on board. Our room wasn’t open, so we headed to the
restaurant and got some lunch. He asked
if we wanted dessert. Really?? Yes, of course!! Theresa had noticed that the White Chocolate Macadamia
nut cake came with a very small bit of pistachio gelato. She also noticed the table next to us got a
big serving of ice cream. So, I ordered
the ice cream for me, and the WCMN cake for her, with two gelatos…so that I could
have my gelato while in Italy, of course!!
It was GOOD!!
| Sharing a drink with all of our friends!! |
After unpacking, we had a little time before dinner. So, we began exploring the ship. It was cold and windy outside, so when we got
to a lounge (since we had the drink package), we stopped in for a nip. We sat for a while enjoying a moment of quiet
and fun. We had some great laughs over
bad water, good (free) drinks, and no one around! It was fun!
Dinner was amazing!!
It is incredible how “simple” food can be so good!! We really had fun and just relished the
incredible blessing travelling like this can be! (We hope you all enjoy this window into
travel with us! We are amazed that we
get to experience these things!).
After dinner, we saw a comedy show. He was really funny, doing a bit of juggling
and some poking fun at the audience. At
one moment, he was going to toss a prop to the guy in front of us. Spontaneously, each of us moved dramatically
to the side, showing little confidence in either the comedian or the guy catching. The comedian saw it and was amused. J It was a great way to end the night!!
