Day 7—Sea Day Celebration!

Most of you know this is our 25^th year of marriage.  So, we are celebrating it as much as we can.  So, when we booked this cruise, they ask if there is anything we’re celebrating, so, of course, Theresa tells them “Our 25^th Anniversary!”  It took a little playing with numbers, but we decided to pick today as our celebration. 

Huevos Rancheros???  NOT!!!

We try to avoid food pix, especially since some people HATE that, but in this case, we sort of HAVE to add it!  We slept in and just barely made it to breakfast.  Previously, we noticed on the breakfast menu they had “Huevos Rancheros”, and Theresa overheard someone commenting “Those were the best huevos rancheros I have ever had!”  So, we were piqued to try them.  After the waiter (from Mauritius) described them, they sounded so good, we BOTH got them!!  When the plates arrived, we burst out laughing!!  Everything he said was true, and yet…they looked like someone heard about them from a friend who tried them once, and a few years later told his friend the chef, who gave it a try!!  For those of you not familiar, HR are basically fried eggs (usually over easy), with a tomato and pepper sauce (Ranchero) on top, served with tortillas and refried beans…and sometimes potatoes or rice.  Yeahhhhhh.  We got baked beans!  And the “tortil La” (as he called it), was sort of toasted, cut in half, then decorated with the ingredients.  It was sort of like ordering a pizza and getting an open faced sandwich with wheat bread and cubed tomatoes, with a slide of ham and cheese, and a quarter of a pepper.  It did taste good, but wow…

Vacation Pics!!!  (Everybody does this, right?)

In the afternoon, we went to the lecture on Einstein’s Theory of Relativity!!  At least once, I recalled a friend (he knows who he is) commenting “Your vacations are NOT what I call ‘vacation’!”  I wonder if that is a common perception.  Anyway, the presentation was actually VERY well done.  It is a challenge to present something like that with NO MATH, to a diverse audience.  Anyway, it did help me to understand a few more elements of the theory.  And it came with a few good slides BRIEFLY put up for fun!

Later we went to a presentation on the Suez Canal.  I may save most of that for tomorrow.  The one tidbit I will throw out was someone’s observation that the Arabs read right to left, and Suez is Zeus backward.  Yeah.  I’m not sure that is how the port of Suez on the Red Sea got its name, or a quirky coincidence.  I’ll let you pick your story and go with it!!

A little pre-dinner celebration!

When we came back to the room, our steward had left us a chilled bottle of Champagne to celebrate our big day.  So, we went out onto the balcony to have a glass and dialogue.  Then decided it was chilly and dark and came back in.  J

A nice gift at dinner.

We had a very nice dinner, and they brought us a very nice chocolate cake.  They offered to send it to our room, so we looked forward to coming back to a nice treat at the end of the evening.  Well, we came back to our room and they had a beautiful display for us…including a GIANT chocolate cake in addition to the nice small one.  I have NO idea how they expect two people to eat these two cakes!!  We will have to figure that out tomorrow!!

Silent Disco...sounds just like the picture!!

At 10 PM, they had a “Silent Disco”.  If you have never heard of this…neither had we!  Let us set the scene!  They pass out headphones, which can tune to any one of three stations.  The stations are color coded, so a light on the sides shows what you are tuned in to at that moment.  Blue was basically some oldie 50s slow dance music.  Red (?) was mostly 70s and 80s Bee Gees and the like.  Green was a mix but included club music like Pitbull.  You choose your station, and adjust your volume.  The room is full of people getting’ down to one of three types of music.  Now, picture a bunch of 60-70 years olds jamming to “Blurred Lines”.  There were people in all decades, but let’s face it, the average age was over 50.  So, you tune in to, say, Green, and the DJ or song is telling you to sing along, so people are belting out something.  Then you take off your headphones, and…the view is the same, but now you hear a cacophonic chorus of singing and NO BACKGROUND MUSIC!!  And then picture me, with all the rhythm and moves of an oak tree.  I stayed next to the wall, trying to upstage the wall for dance moves, and Theresa is either laughing having a ball, or laughing at my dance skills.  Either way…not a pretty moment!  But, I sort of had fun, and she certainly did!  Time for bed!
